Panfilo de Narvaez was a Spanish soldier and a explorer. He helped conquer Cuba in 1511, he lost his eye trying to arrest the Spanish explorer known as Hernan Cortes in Mexico in the year 1526. Holy emperor Charles V granted Narvaez the unexplored land named Florida in 1526, Narvaez led an expedition there in 1528. Landing near Tampa Bay, Narvaez marches inland and lost many of his men due to storms and attacks from the Indians. Having them to be cut off their ships, Narvaez and some of his men built five crude barges. They sailed along the coast to what we now call south Texas. In November 1528, winds and currents forced Narvaez boat onto the Gulf of Mexico and he and his crew were drowned .
